Hey peeps~

I just wanted to draw everyone's attention to my friend and feller DA'er, :iconchadfuller: . As some of you know, Chad has been waging nothing short of a heroic battle against a very rare and aggressive form of cancer that took his leg a couple of years back. Since then it's been a never-ending series of chemo' sessions and surgeries. Take out a tumor and two take its place. I've spoken to Chad regularly throughout his ordeal and not once have I ever heard him complain or express an ounce of pity for himself. I originally reached out to Chad when I heard about his cancer, a similar type that took my dear brother, Michael Turner. Since I've grown to know him over these last four years, he's reminded me of Mike in so many ways. It's been humbling, awe-inspiring, and life altering for me to witness Chad's courage and grace.

Two days ago I received some disturbing news from Chad saying that the doctors have found and incredibly large tumor that's taking up a good portion of his abdomen and chest cavity, so large that the doctors didn't even realize what they were looking at. It's affecting most of his major organs and needs to be address immediately. Unfortunately, there is a very low survival prognosis. The news I was given by Chad is that he has anywhere from a week to less than a month to live. It sounds like he's going in for surgery next week. I may or may not get news from him again.

What I'm asking is that as many people as possible keep Chad in their prayers. Send him prayers, love, positive energy, whatever you like to call it. I'm a big believer in the power of prayer, having benefited from it myself in the past. Chad is a warrior. I still believe he can come out on the other side of this but he needs help. Just take a minute, if you would, and help a brother out.

Thanks to all!

Though I won't be attending the show, I wanted to put the word out about the big Drink and Draw party Saturday night. It's a huge Drink and Draw event, co-sponsored by Wacom! The event will be hosted By Boom Comic Shop, located at 835 5th Avenue, in the historic Wyatt Earp saloon and brothel building! The owner and proprietor is one of my best friends so be sure to give him a hard time if you see him. Go forth and drink....and draw.....and drink some more!

Best!

`TimTownsend's gallery is a glittering array of fantastic skill and comic book awesomeness. His dedication to finely tuning his skills is without doubt, and you'll always find Tim looking for ways in which he can inspire other artists to continue with dedication to their chosen craft. Tim is well known for embellishing our community with stunning artwork, but he's also the perfect finisher for a day of browsing. You don't need to be a comic nerd to appreciate everything that he does, however you may find yourself becoming one after visiting his gallery. So it's with a POW and a BANG that we bestow the Deviousness Award for February 2011 to `TimTownsend. Congratulations, Tim!

FAQ's:

1) I am a professional and Ive been working for MARVEL COMICS (as well as DC, IMAGE, and many others) for the last 19 years. No, I do not want to work on your self-published project for free....even though its likely the "best idea EV-ER".

2) I do ALL of my inks BY HAND. I do NOT ink digitally...at all....never. And no, I do NOT have anything against digital inking.

3) My tools of the trade in terms of inking are a WINDSOR NEWTON SERIES 7 #2 brush (about 75%), a HUNT 102 CROW QUILL NIB (about 20%), technical pens and other assorted items(5%), and KOH-I-NOOR 3080 waterproof drawing ink.

4) I rarely take on commission work due to my typically crazy schedule but dont be afraid to ask. Every once in a blue moon I can squeeze one in.

5) I am currently working on The Uncanny X-Men..

6) For those of you wanting to know "how to get work in comics", here's the straight answer. Spend many years learning how to draw from life. Go to school (not a requirement to get hired but the best way to learn the skill-sets youll need to become good enough to get hired). Once you're grounded in the basics of anatomy, form, lighting, etc. you can begin to study the art form of sequential story-telling. Just being able to draw a neat pin-up doesn't mean a thing. You have to be able to tell a story. Youll also have to be able to do this all in a timely manner. Deadlines rule this business. Once you're there the final obstacle is simple. YOU HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE VYING FOR THE SAME WORK. You'll be competing with seasoned professionals as well as new-comers. You have to stand out from the pack. No one cares if your work is "good for you". No one cares if you were the best artist in High School. They only care if your work is better than the rest and that its marketable. The big companies don't take samples any more which means you'll have to travel to conventions and meet with editors for portfolio reviews. Be nice, listen, don't get defensive if they tell you your work has problems, and don't smell bad. Know that everyone has a "killer idea that they've been working on for years" and that no one is likely to care about yours until you've established some professional credibility. Know that the odds are against you ever breaking in and that it takes a lot of time, patience, and diligence to weather the gauntlet. Only the strong survive. I think that about covers it!

7) I'm no longer doing on-line critiques. I get asked at least 15 times a day. They take too much time and I have work and a family to attend to. I'll most likely do an open call for portfolio reviews here on D.A. a couple of times a year. I hope you understand.

8) Before asking questions about things such as projects Ive worked on, who I've worked with, if I have any pencil-to-ink samples, do I do anything besides ink, etc, be sure you look through my WHOLE galley, not just the first page. I have almost 350 gallery deviations and many of the answers to questions such a these can be found therein.

Thought I would call your attention to this since you're so awesome about calling out art thieves...

Jan Duursema posted about this on her FB page. The person in question is apparently making montages of others work, over-painting a few effects (mostly consisting of paint splatters) and then claiming it as his. He took her Darth Maul from a DH comics issue and combined with a cover piece from The Force Unleashed. Other people have identified several other pieces belonging to Kubert, Land, and Lee.

Wow. Not really sure how to answer that. Are you asking who has the best control or who adds and interprets it the best?I Either way, I dont think theres any one answer. Most good inkers can crosshatch just fine but thats not really what sets one aside from the pack.

My personal experience was that the crosshatching was more challenging than nailing the right line weight. I was watching scott williams on youtube and this guy came up as a suggestion. His name is dan williams and he had some good info on crosshatching.
Here is the link if you are interested.

No one aspect is more important than the other. It boils down to three things, drawing ability (which leads to an ability to understand how to interpret pencils), an understanding of line-weights and texture, and control over your tools. Cross-hatching is just one technique amongst many. You might be a cross-hatching master but how will that help you ink an Adam Hughes or a Joe Mad? It's just one nail in the greater tool-box.

Tim, Thanks for taking the time to review my portfolio at Megacon.  Your advice and critique were very valuable to me and impossible to find without someone with your talent and vast experience.  Your inking has been one of my favorites for many years but I was unfamiliar with your original art...All I can say is that it's incredible and I hope to see a lot more of it.  All the best to you!

I just want to let you know that I saved a lot of your deviations on my comic archives for flatting and rendering practice. I hope it's okay. Keep on wowing us with your superb inking skills. You are truly an inspiration!
