Punisher Christmas Special by TimTownsend Punisher Christmas Special by TimTownsend
Here we have the cover to the upcoming PUNISHER CHRISTMAS SPECIAL by Chris Bachalo and myself. The cover image solicitations are up on line so I guess its ok for me to show it now.

A lot of you have asked for pencils to compare with the inks so here you go. These pencils are pretty tight for Chris so there wasnt as much room to play around...although, as you can see, I did make some minor changes. Hope you like!

This piece still amazes me, after faving it more than 4 years ago. It's crazy how you manage NOT to lose the style and integrity of Chris' work and yet improving the small details (like the highlights in Punisher's hair) without overkill. Blah mouthful, but yah know what i mean...right? RIGHT??? :D

I did a double page pin-up, pencils and inks, WAAAAAY back in issue....24....maybe. I cant remember the exact issue. The cover was orange with Spawn sitting on a branch. I also helped out inking some of Greg Capullos earliest issues.

One of the few Inkers that can really bring Chris's pencils to print. Love your work, Tim. Many props.

I don't normally post comments on professional work simply because of how many of them you must get..

first off, thanks for posting your stuff! it helps us amateurs alot!

quick question, when you're inking do you go straight over the pencils, or use a separate sheet and re-trace?

Hey, Tim...
I should have commented on each and everyone...
Your work is awsome and I admire the complementary aspect of your inking and Chris' pencils... Both of you are lucky to have each other.
Wish you all the best...
And Seasons greetings...

Hey Tim - I've always enjoyed your stuff and think you're one of the best. Question: what was the logic behind changing the Punisher's shirt from a solid black to a gray-tone texture? Seems like the logo would pop better with pure black/white contrast. I know that I don't know everything and there may be a nugget of wisdom here I'd like to mine!

Thanks! ;)

Thanks for the kinds words! Regarding my logic, heres my take. For one, I dont consider logo's to be a part of the image unless theyre actially an integrated part of the graphics. The cover illustration stands along and the logo's are just something slapped on top...sometimes to its benefit, many times not. The decision on the tunic deals with lighting, energy, and framing. I think the logic on the lighting is pretty self-evident. The lineword, when done right, can also lend an air of movement and energy, not just shadow and depth. Guys like Williamson and Wrightson were masters of this. As for framing, by not going with a solid black, it set the main figure, the focus of the entire image, apart from the heavy foreground blacks thus framing him out nicely. Hope that helps! Thanks again!!!

Thanks Tim - yeah I was 'sniffin' that foreground/subject separation may be the thought in mind. Good point on energy flow, and line direction. Lighting, given. Again, great work - I've always thought that you pick up where Austin left off, in my opinion of inking legacy.

im not sure why i feel comfortable watching the punisher shoot little evil elves...
must be those inks and that supersexy T-shirt !
have chris' pencils always been loose ? i'd figure the companies would like more tightened up work. Especially from newcomers, am i right ?
more pencils-to-ink comparisons !
