I just dug some old photo copies out of a box. These are pre-home scanning era so pardon the quality. This was the first X-Men cover that Chris Bachalo and I did together. It doesnt feel like its been 12 years since. Amazing.
Good memories! Chris signed this comic for me when he came to Australia in '98, and even took time to look at my portfolio and said he liked it! Man it just made my day. Your stuff is inspirational, as always.
I think this story arc was when I really went texture crazy. Chris lets me do pretty much whatever I want and there was a lot of room to play around with this stuff. I love outdoors scenes since theres usually more organics and room to experiment.
Will do. I just keep a bowl of water next to my desk and swish the brush around in it every few minutes or so. I use traditional brush cleaner ever few days or so to get the gunk out of the ferule but not as often as I should. My guess is that, if youre trashing your brushes that quickly, it might be the ink youre using. Some of the blacker inks tend to be more gummy and harder on brushes. Either way, you should be cleaning them daily in one form or another.
It might be that you are washing them TOO hard as well. My teacher, an ex-disney background painter, made sure we knew that even though we have to clean them everyday we have to be gentle with the brushes. I add 1 or 2 drops of ammonia to my water that i keep next to me when inking.
