keep it art related but Im already sharing most of my stuff in my gallery section. Then it dawned on me. Why not share my collection of OTHER peoples art?
Ive been an avid art collector since college, before I even broke in to the industry. Im a fan first, a pro' second. Ive had my collection up on the Comicartfans.com site for years but I know many here might not be aware of the venue. That being said, Im going to post a different piece of art from my private collection every now and then to liven things up a bit.
Here is my 8th installment by the young Maestro, Travis Charest. This is the cover to WILDC.A.T.S. #2. I still remember seeing this cover in person for the first time. I literally had an emotional reaction to it. Id never seen one of Travis's painted originals in person before so I wasn't aware of the depth of the detail and.....craftsmanship...for lack of a better term. This scan just doesn't show the pin-point precision and subtlety employed to create it. When I look much of Travis's work, naturally, Im inclined to try and dissect it, to figure out how he did this and that. But the various methods he uses are sometime so utterly seamless that it just defies logic. Its almost like this stuff just springs from his mind full blown. How can a human hand produce this?! I have the answer. Travis is NOT human! That must be it.
This particular cover may not be one his more exciting ones but, for me, its one of my all-time-favorites of his. Theres something about the simplicity of the design, the calm "moment in time" quality to it that stands in stark contrast to most of his more action oriented pieces. And, for some reason, it conjures images of Maurice Sendak in Where the Wild Things Are. I just love it.

I always envisioned Jessica Alba as Voodoo, so naturally when I saw her doing the pole dance in Sin City I was like DAMN! it's Voodoo!...almost. (sorry for rambling, but good art makes all kinds of connections to other things)

You always hear that people want to see something different. Then you give them something different. And they don't know how to deal with it.

Beautiful piece. Any chance you can post up a close up? I've never seen any of Travis' originals close up and you know how we illustrator like to "sniff" the art close up.

Dude...your love of comic art is pretty vast. I've never actually bought an original. I almost did...long story (I'll shorten it here), but when Alex Ross did a Super Grover painting for Palisades (a toy company I used to work for) he was going to let me purchase the original, but it fell through for reasons not related to him or my desire to buy. He did, in the end, give me the original sketch he did for the painting as a gift. It is the only piece of 'real' art I actually own, a treasured possession to say the least. To say the least it was a huge highlight in my career, not to mention life itself!
